Selling a Sony Handycam or Video Camera: The Models We Buy and How They Are Priced

September 13, 2026

"Sony handycam old model price" is one of the most common searches that brings people to us, usually from someone who found a camcorder in a cupboard and wants to know whether it is worth anything. Often it is. This guide lists the video cameras we currently buy, explains how a camcorder is priced, and tells you what to have ready.

The 21 video cameras on our list

Our sell video camera page currently lists 21 models, each with its own page and a live maximum for Flawless condition.

Sony consumer Handycams: HDR-CX130, HDR-CX190, HDR-CX200, HDR-CX220, HDR-CX230, HDR-CX280, HDR-CX405, HDR-PJ200 and PJ675 (the PJ models have a built-in projector).

Sony 4K Handycams: FDR-AX43 and FDR-AX53.

Sony professional camcorders: HXR-NX5R, NX200, NX5, PXW-Z90 and PXW-Z70.

Canon: C100 and C100 Mark II.

Panasonic: CH X 1000 4K, CX8ED and HC-PV100GW.

If your camcorder is not on the list, it can still be quoted manually. Call or WhatsApp +91 95608 22859, or send a photo of the front and the model label to Instant Quote. Between February and September 2026 our purchase records show a dozen camcorders bought in India, including PXW-Z90, FDR-AX43 and NX200 bodies, so these are not theoretical listings.

Where the model name is

On a Handycam the model name is printed on the side of the body near the lens, and again on the label under the battery or on the base plate. The serial number is on the same label. Keep it readable, because the agent records the base of the camera with the serial number at the check, exactly as with a DSLR or mirrorless body. "HDR" models record Full HD; "FDR" models record 4K; "HXR", "NX" and "PXW" are the professional bodies. If the label is worn, send a photo of the camera to Instant Quote and we identify it.

How a video camera is priced

The price is built from the same four inputs as a camera:

  1. The model's current market value, shown on its page. This moves with the market; check it close to the day you sell.
  2. The condition grade: Flawless (100% new condition, zero scuffs and scratches), Good (90% condition, minor scuffs rarely visible), Average (75% condition, a few scratches and scuffs) or Below Average (55% condition, major scratches or dents).
  3. The age bracket: under 4 months, 4 to 12, 12 to 18, 18 to 24 or over 24 months. Many Handycams will be in the last bracket, and that is fine; the bracket is a fixed step, and the model value carries the price. Our guide on age brackets and resale value explains how it works.
  4. The accessories: the original box, the charger, the battery, the bill and the bag. Each adds to the figure; none is required.

Unlike a DSLR or mirrorless body, a camcorder has a fixed lens, so there is no separate lens line. The figure on the page is for the whole camera.

What we check at pickup

The agent checks the camcorder in front of you against the grade you chose and records a short power-on video, then lays out the accessories and matches them to what you entered on the form. If the camera matches what you described, the price stands and you are paid on the spot by bank transfer, UPI or cash. If something material is different, the agent re-quotes with the reason and you can decline.

We do not buy dead cameras. A camcorder must power on and record. If yours does not, it is not something we can quote.

Before you hand it over

  • Charge the battery, or keep the charger next to the camera, so the power-on check is quick.
  • Copy your recordings off the internal memory and the card, then remove the card.
  • Reset the camera from its setup menu so your Wi-Fi and date settings are cleared. Our reset checklist covers the general steps.
  • Find the bill if you have it: it settles the age bracket and adds to the price. Our guide on how payment, ID proof and the bill work when you sell has the rest.
  • Keep the original AC adapter, any spare battery and the bag with the camera. The battery and the charger are two of the five accessory lines on the form, and a spare is worth showing at the check even though it is not a line of its own.

Where we buy camcorders

Free doorstep pickup in ten cities, including Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, plus walk-in stores in Delhi, Pune and Chandigarh. Anywhere else in India, you can sell by courier: the camcorder is checked on a video call, 90% is paid in advance, and the courier charge is shared half-half.

If you are also clearing out a DSLR or mirrorless camera, our guide on how much you get for an old camera covers those.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sony Handycam models do you buy?

HDR-CX130, CX190, CX200, CX220, CX230, CX280, CX405, HDR-PJ200, PJ675, FDR-AX43 and FDR-AX53, plus the professional HXR-NX5R, NX200, NX5, PXW-Z90 and PXW-Z70. Each has its own price page.

My Handycam is more than five years old. Is it still worth selling?

Yes, if it powers on and records. Over 24 months is simply the oldest age bracket; the model's current market value and the condition grade carry the price.

Is there a separate lens price for a camcorder?

No. A camcorder has a fixed lens, so the figure on its page is for the whole camera, unlike a DSLR or mirrorless body where the lens is a separate line.

Do you buy a camcorder that does not switch on?

No. We do not buy dead cameras. It must power on and record for us to quote it.
