Before You Sell Your Camera: Back Up, Reset and Unpair It

A camera carries more of you than it looks like. Photos on the card, your name in the copyright field, your home Wi-Fi, and a pairing with your phone can all go out of the door with it. None of this is hard to clear, and doing it before you sell takes about fifteen minutes.

This checklist works for any camera you sell, whether to us or anyone else. Menu names differ between brands and firmware versions, so we describe what to look for rather than printing a button sequence that might be wrong for your model.

Step 1: Back up everything

• Copy the memory card to your computer or phone, and open a few files to check they copied.
• Check for internal memory. Some compact cameras, action cameras and camcorders store files inside the device as well as on a card. If yours does, copy those files too.
• If you use a cloud or app backup, check the latest files actually arrived before you delete anything.

Step 2: Take out the memory cards

Keep your cards. A card is cheap compared to the photos on it, and a camera is priced on the body and its accessories, not on the card. If your camera has two card slots — many full-frame bodies do — check both.

Step 3: Clear your name from the camera

Many cameras let you store your name as copyright or author information, which is then written into every photo the camera takes. Look in the setup menu for an option such as copyright information, owner name or author. Delete what is there. If you skip this, the next owner's photos carry your name.

Step 4: Remove Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairings

Cameras remember the phones and networks they have connected to. Two things to do:

1. In the camera, find the wireless or network settings and reset or delete the saved connections.
2. On your phone, remove the camera from the brand's app and from your phone's Bluetooth list. The apps are Canon Camera Connect, Nikon SnapBridge, Sony's Creators' App (older Sony bodies used Imaging Edge Mobile) and Fujifilm XApp (older bodies used Camera Remote).

For action cameras and drones, the brand's app may list the device under your account. If it does, remove it there as well. GoPro cameras have a reset-connections option in their preferences menu.

Step 5: Reset the camera's settings

Look in the setup menu for an option such as reset, initialise, or clear all settings. This returns menus, custom buttons and saved modes to factory defaults. It does not remove the shutter count, and it does not affect the camera's condition or price.

Do this last, after steps 3 and 4, because on some cameras a full reset also clears wireless settings and you want to be sure nothing was missed.

Step 6: For a PlayStation

If you are selling a console, sign out of your account and turn off the setting that makes it your primary console (on PS5 this is under Users and Accounts, called Console Sharing and Offline Play), then reset the console from the system settings. Step 7: Things not to do

• Do not remove the battery or leave it flat. Charge it. Whoever checks the camera has to see it power on and fire the shutter, and we do not buy dead cameras.
• Do not peel off the serial number label. The serial number on the base is part of the standard check at pickup.
• Do not throw away the box, charger or bill yet. Each one adds to the price.
• Do not clean the sensor with a cloth. A blower is fine. Anything more is a job for a service centre.

What happens next

With the camera cleared, get your price. Does a factory reset lower my camera's price?

No. A reset changes settings only. It does not change the condition, the shutter count or the price.

Does resetting a camera clear the shutter count?

No. The shutter count is not affected by a settings reset.

Should I format the memory card before selling?

Keep your card instead. The price does not include the card, so there is no reason to hand it over.

I forgot to unpair the camera from my phone. What should I do?

Remove the camera from the app and from your phone's Bluetooth list. The pairing on your phone side is under your control even after the camera is gone.
