Is It Safe to Sell a Camera by Courier? How the Process Protects You

If you live in a city where we do not offer doorstep pickup, courier is the way to sell your camera to us. The first question almost everyone asks is a fair one: is it safe to put an expensive camera in a box and send it to someone you have only spoken to on the phone?

No way of selling removes every risk, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What a good process does is put each risk in a place where you can see it and control it. This guide explains where the risks actually are, how our courier process handles each one, and what you can do on your side.

Where the risk in a courier sale really is

When people worry about courier sales, they are usually worried about one of three things:

• The price changes after you have sent the camera. You agree a number on the phone, the parcel arrives, and suddenly the buyer finds problems and offers less.
• You are not paid, or paid late. The camera is gone and the money is not.
• The camera is damaged on the way. Something breaks in transit and nobody agrees whose fault it is.

Each of these has a different fix, so it is worth taking them one at a time.

1. The price is agreed before anything is packed

With us, nothing goes into a box until the price is settled. First you check your price on the model page or with a photo through our instant photo quote. Then we do a condition check with you on a video call.

On that call you show us the same things our agent looks at during a doorstep pickup:

• the front of the camera, and the back with the screen on
• the top plate, and the base with the serial number
• the sensor and mount, with the lens removed
• the camera powering on and firing the shutter
• the information screen
• the lens and accessories you are selling

The price is agreed with you after this check. Because both sides have seen the camera working on the call, the conversation about condition happens before the parcel exists, not after it arrives.

2. Most of the money reaches you before the camera reaches us

This is the part that answers the payment worry most directly. For a courier sale we pay 90% of the agreed price in advance, before your parcel reaches us. The remaining 10% is paid after the parcel arrives and we have opened it and matched the item with what we saw on the video call.

In practice this means that for most of the journey the larger share of the money is already with you. The 10% that is held back covers the one thing a video call cannot fully show: that the camera in the box is the same camera, in the same condition, that was on the screen.

3. Transit damage is mostly a packing problem

Couriers drop, stack and throw parcels. A camera that is packed as if that will happen usually arrives fine. The steps we ask every seller to follow are simple:

1. Back up your photos and take out the memory card.
2. Fit the body cap on the camera and the front and rear caps on each lens.
3. Wrap the camera and each lens separately in bubble wrap.
4. Use the original box if you have it, and put it inside a stronger outer carton.
5. Fill the empty space with paper or bubble wrap so nothing moves when you shake the carton.
6. Pack only the items you showed on the video call, then tape every edge.

Take a few photos or a short video while you pack. That record is for you: it shows exactly what went into the box and how it was protected.

What you control on your side

Whoever you sell to, a few habits make a courier sale safer:

• Do not send anything before a price is agreed in writing or on a call. An "I will check and tell you" is not a price.
• Show everything on the call that you intend to send. If a charger or a second battery is going in the box, it should have been on the screen.
• Keep the courier receipt and tracking number until the sale is fully paid.

Who actually sells to us from outside our pickup cities

Courier is not a side door. Of the 909 camera lots we bought in India between 16 February and 10 September 2026, 173 were marked in our purchase books as out-of-city purchases, bought from sellers in towns away from the cities where we work day to day. Towns that appear most often in that list include Vadodara (13), Surat (11), Bhubaneswar (10), Varanasi (8), Kanpur (6) and Ranchi (6).

The models are the same ones people sell everywhere: entry DSLRs like the Nikon D5600 and Canon EOS 1500D, and vlogging cameras like the Sony ZV-E10.

When doorstep pickup is the better choice

If you are in one of our pickup cities, pickup removes the courier leg completely. Our agent checks the camera in front of you and you are paid at the pickup.
